PLANT INFORMATION

TAGASASTE

Tagasaste benifis are:

  • Shelter for livestock
  • Additional feed source.
  • Paddocks susceptible to wind/soil erosion.
  • it uses soil moisture from its root zone throughout the year.
  • Capture nutrients from lower in the soil, reducing the loss of phosphorous into waterways.
  • Uses nitrogen, reducing the acidification of soils.

Tagasaste is a great source of material for soil rejuvenation and fertility depth and expansion.  As a fertilizer it works through feeding the soil organisms that create fertile and healthy soil, it is the safest way to incorporate water retaining vegetable matter into the ground. The creation of humus and top soil is increased at the maximum natural rate.

Chemical compounds which are used to feed plants deprive the soil further because they are not completely balanced and therefore not wholesome.Mulched Tagasaste feeds earth worms during the night this creates an area rich in nutrients which manifests itself by the vigorous, prolific and lush grass which stands out from areas where no top dressing of this material has occurred.

HORSES

  HORSES

Sound diet is the basis of health, wellbeing and performance in Peter Andrews horses.

From Rain Lover, a two time Melbourne Cup winner, to Eleazar, one of the fastest horses ever seen in Australia .

Via correct soil, water and plant management an optimal pasture based diet is achieved for peak elite performance.

The horse has evolved via grazing a large biodiverse mix of pasture species on open plains. This is seen in the diets of wild animals such as the zebra.

The equine digestive system is perfectly adapted to achieve maximum nutrient absorption for health and performance on this diet, not ones based on synthetic fertilizers and additives.

Walers, a station bred horse used by the military in the first world war were raised on these pastures. They proved to have the greatest endurance of any of the mounts across the armed forces in the war.

A top English stud consistently producing group one race winners considers its pastures in decline if there are less than fifty plant species present. Healthy pastures have eighty or more species in a square metre. No artificial fertilizers are applied nor the paddocks ploughed.

Horses are pickers. In the wild or given a large area to roam, they move from grass to shrub, to pond, eating lilies, cattails, trees, and roots. All are delicacies not to be missed.

Many people and their animals have lost the importance of the real food of the earth—herbs. All herbs have exceptional qualities of health and healing for animals and humans. They contain minerals and vitamins, and many have anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, and nervine qualities. In the middle ages, a working horse was kept healthy on a combination of, what we call today, culinary herbs—parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, mint and basil.

“For many of us, Peter Andrews’ genius lies in his proven understanding of the essential linkage between properly managed surface water filtrating and moving correctly through soils made healthy by natural sequence farming and complementary processes.”

Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, AO(Mil), CVO, MC (Retd)

Former Governor-General of Australia

“I have known Peter Andrews for 37 years and worked closely with him on Baramul Stud ... Peter’s work at Baramul is ongoing & Baramul just keeps improving every year.”
